Where buyers and renters want to live

Inner-city suburbs and lifestyle-rich beachside suburbs are the most desirable areas for Australian homebuyers and renters, research by real estate portal Domain.com.au suggests.

Domain has identified the most searched-for locations among would-be homebuyers between April 23 and May 28 this year.

In most states, the views of renters and buyers matched up, with the same suburb at the top of both groups’ hit lists.

In New South Wales, top of the list is Paddington, followed by Newtown.

In Victoria, inner city Melbourne comes up trumps, while in Queensland, Southport on the Gold Coast was the most popular suburb.

In Western Australia, inner city Perth was the most commonly searched-for suburb among both buyers and renters.

In Tasmania it’s Launceston followed by Burnie, while in the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory the top of the ’burbs are pretty predictable: central Canberra and central Darwin respectively.

Only South Australia breaks the mould, with renters and buyers diverging slightly. Beachside Glenelg is number one on buyers’ lists, followed by central Adelaide. For renters, Adelaide is first, and Glenelg second.
