Private house approvals up

Approvals for private sector houses rose by 3.1 per cent in December following a fall in the previous month, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Its building approvals data shows that Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia all recorded more private house approvals, with rises of 4.6 per cent, 2.2 per cent, 0.5 per cent and 3.3 per cent respectively.

Overall the number of dwellings approved in Australia rose by 2.2 per cent with Tasmania and Victoria recording the largest increases of 21.7 per cent and 11.1 per cent respectively.

The number of approvals for private sector dwellings other than houses rose by 9.1 per cent in December.
